Back pain can have many possible causes. A strained muscle, stiff spinal joint, irritated nerve, herniated disc, or degenerative change can produce symptoms that feel similar but may respond best to different forms of care.
At Tarpon Total Health Care, we offer both chiropractic adjustments and nonsurgical spinal decompression. The right choice is not based on which treatment is “better.” It depends on what is causing your pain, how your symptoms behave, and what we find during your evaluation.
What Are Chiropractic Adjustments?
A chiropractic adjustment uses a controlled, targeted force to improve movement in a joint that is stiff or not functioning normally. Adjustments may be performed by hand or with a specialized instrument, and the technique can be modified according to the patient’s condition and comfort level.
Chiropractic adjustments may be considered when back pain is associated with:
- Restricted spinal movement
- Joint stiffness
- Muscle tension
- Poor posture
- Repetitive strain
- Certain sports or workplace injuries
- Some types of mechanical back pain
By improving joint mobility, adjustments may help reduce discomfort and allow the surrounding muscles to function more efficiently. Some patients notice relief relatively quickly, while others need a series of visits and additional supportive care.
What Is Spinal Decompression?
Nonsurgical spinal decompression uses a specialized traction table to gently stretch and relax the spine. At Tarpon Total Health Care, we use the Saunders 3D ActiveTrac system, which allows us to adjust the patient’s position and customize the amount and direction of traction.
Decompression is intended to reduce pressure within the spinal discs and around nearby nerve roots. It may also support circulation of oxygen and nutrients to the affected disc area.
We may consider spinal decompression for patients with conditions such as:
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Sciatica
- Degenerative disc changes
- Certain pinched nerves
- Spinal stenosis
- Some cases of spondylolisthesis
- Disc-related neck or lower back pain
A typical treatment session lasts approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Patients often describe a gentle stretching sensation, and there is generally no required recovery time after a session.
How Do the Treatments Compare?
| Consideration | Chiropractic Adjustments | Spinal Decompression |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Joint movement and spinal function | Disc and nerve pressure |
| Treatment method | Controlled manual or instrument-assisted force | Gentle traction using a specialized table |
| May be considered for | Joint stiffness, restricted motion, posture-related pain, and mechanical back pain | Herniated or bulging discs, sciatica, and certain disc-related conditions |
| Typical experience | Brief, targeted treatment | Gradual stretching and relaxation |
| Treatment length | Often completed in several minutes | Usually approximately 25–30 minutes |
| Downtime | Generally none | Generally none |
These are general differences. Your symptoms, examination findings, health history, and imaging—when appropriate—help determine which approach may be suitable.
Can You Receive Both Treatments?
Yes. Chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression address different aspects of spinal function, so some patients may benefit from including both in a personalized care plan.
For example, decompression may be used to reduce pressure affecting a disc or nerve, while gentle adjustments may help improve mobility in other restricted areas of the spine. Supportive treatments such as massage therapy, laser therapy, electrical stimulation, stretching, or lifestyle recommendations may also be included when appropriate.
We do not believe every person with back pain should receive the same combination of therapies. At Tarpon Total Health Care, Dr. John Huy and our team evaluate each patient individually and adjust the treatment plan based on progress.
Which Treatment Is Right for You?
Chiropractic adjustments may be more appropriate when pain is primarily related to joint stiffness, restricted movement, or mechanical dysfunction.
Spinal decompression may be considered when symptoms suggest disc or nerve involvement, especially if you are experiencing pain that travels into the hip or leg, numbness, tingling, or discomfort that worsens with prolonged sitting.
However, symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause. A careful examination is necessary before deciding on treatment. Spinal decompression and chiropractic adjustments are not appropriate for every patient, particularly when fractures, severe osteoporosis, spinal instability, infection, tumors, or other serious conditions are present.
Know When Back Pain Needs Urgent Medical Care
Seek immediate medical attention if back pain is accompanied by loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, rapidly worsening weakness, fever, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms following a serious accident.
These warning signs may indicate a condition requiring urgent medical evaluation rather than routine conservative care.
